Cultural Competency

One of our core beliefs at Kente Circle is that in order to be culturally aware and sensitive to all forms of diversity we must embrace openness to new perspectives and experiences within our communities and in all areas of our lives. We must live what we teach. We challenge ourselves and our interns to engage in our communities and to experience the differences that can bridge impasses and expand our cultural humility and enrich our continued growth. As committed trainers and co-owners of Kente Circle, we join with our interns, externs and contract employees, in attending monthly culture and diversity experiences. This is part of our continued effort to gain a more holistic understanding of the diverse communities in which we work and live in. Our past activities have included: “Book of Rhymes,” The Spoken Word, The Pink Dress; “Japanese Internment Camps”, Hot Combs; African American Hair Culture, Cinco de Mayo parade, The Pride Institute, The Minneapolis Juneteenth celebration and The Vagina Monologues; part of a global campaign to educate and dismantle violence against young girls and women. We are also committed to volunteering at Sabathani’s Food Shelf and local Family Resource center.
